MSB speaks at NESTA "People Helping People" conference

David Bourroughs, MSB Support Broker speaks at NESTA's "People Helping People" conference

David Bourroughs last week spoke about his experiences of completing MySupportBroker's accredited 12-week training and induction programme and becoming a fully accredited Level-3 peer Support Broker.

Thanks to Nesta’s support MSB continues to develop the innovative model of peer-led care planning and brokerage for people with long term health conditions. And to help promote and raise awareness of the work MSB do, David took to the stage to share his story in front of more than 200 guests and delegates.

David tells his inspirational story

He gave a really inspirational speech about why he decided to enter the world of support brokerage.  He started off by talking about his Direct Marketing fundraising background, having spent 7 years working for the disability charity Scope, and how he took the decision to leave, so he could better manage his cerebral palsy and live a better, more enjoyable life.

David told the audience: After a few months off to recharge the batteries I stumbled across the MySupportBroker website. I had an interest in the area and obviously know the barriers people can face when getting their care plans and budgets in place.’

Why David joined MySupportBroker

He then spoke about MSB's key principals of recruiting peer Support Brokers with long term health conditions and disabilities as the main reason why he decided to enrol with MSB's College.

David continued: Everyone who works for MSB has lived experiences of the issues which disabled people and the elderly face on a daily basis.  This gives people with all kinds of disabilities and conditions the chance to work or volunteer regardless of the barriers they may face because of their impairment.’

"It really is the most rewarding experience..."

David concluded his speech by talking about his first support plan he undertook as part of his volunteering to become an accredited Broker. ‘Even though it was difficult I managed to put the plan together successfully and I have to say that volunteering or working with MySupportBroker is one of the most rewarding experiences anyone can have as you will change somebody’s life.

If someone is feeling down or depressed a volunteer Coach or Broker can help them to see the light at the end of the tunnel and support them to live their life just like any of us who can take those everyday tasks like cooking, shopping or going out for granted.’
